When you are out and about exploring Skye if you have time, try and go down some of the wee tracks you always drive past. On many occasions you will be pleasantly surprised by what is waiting for you at the end of the track.
Last Saturday Andy and I had a few hours off and decided to go a wee drive to find a new farm shop in Torrin on the road to Elgol. Nestling in a sheltered location beneath the mountain Blaven, you’ll find Mrs Mack’s Farm Shop recently opened by Sara MacKinnon. We had heard lots of good things about the new shop and were keen to see what lay in store for us!
Sara and her husband John raise their own beef on the croft, Bla Bheinn Beef. We were intrigued to find out that one of the cow’s they raised had come from our neighbour Donald John MacLennan the retired Skye vet, he breeds highland cattle. There was a selection of steaks, burgers, joints & sausages, this meat sells fast and is gaining a reputation for good quality home produced beef.
Sara has just added some new lines Arran Black Pudding , Stornaway White Pudding , Ramsey’s Haggis Slices , Ramsey’s Pork, Leek and Smokey Bacon Sausages , Smoked Venison and a lovely new Isle of Mull Hebridean Blue Cheese.
There is a great selection of gifts and candles for sale and some Skye postcards, oh, I forgot to mention the fudge Sara’s Mum Lorraine makes, it flies off the shelf, so be quick. We were surprised by the amount of enticing goodies, definitely an Aladdin’s cave for foodies.
You can enjoy a cup of coffee, tea or a cold drink accompanied by a filled roll or some tasty home baking or, if you prefer have some Cream of Galloway ice cream. There are picnic benches and a children’s trampoline and a slide. An amazing place to relax with your family and enjoy the beautiful surroundings, with some great Skye hospitality from Sara and her team.
